18th century portrait miniature of Lady Lucy Digby (1748-1787) with her son

Signed on the reverse and dated 1786

This is a particularly fine example of Paillou's work prior to 1800, before he developed his better known style where the figures is against a "sunset" background. It was painted one year before she died aged 39

Lucy was the daughter of Stephen Fox-Strangways, 1st Earl of Ilchester and Elizabeth Strangways Fox-Strangway. She married, 1st October, 1771, Stephen Digby.
