17th Century portrait miniature of lady from the court
Artist/Maker | MATTHEW SNELLING (1621-1678) |
Description | wearing brown dress with white underslip, a large jewelled drop pearl suspsended from black ribbon at her corsage, pearl necklace, earrings and strand of pearls in her hair.
set in the original gold frame with pierced spiral cresting Snelling worked as a limner for over 20 years. His style appears to have been an influence on the miniature painter Thomas Flatman. This example is a particularly fine example particularly in the rendition of the golden silk dress. It has not been possible to ascertain the identity of this sitter but perhaps the three moles, one on her nose, one on her neck and the other on her chest might be a clue. |
